FBi 94.5’s All The best: Silence

On All the Best this week we broke the golden rule of radio and bring to you one hour of silence- stories of silence that is. We find out what it’s like to hear sound for the very first time, and what it’s like remember through music. How awkward it is to eat dinner in silence with strangers and how it feels to experience a chamber where sound does not exist.

HEARING FOR THE FIRST TIME
Imagine finding out tomorrow that you’re going to lose the ability to hear music, conversations, or even something as simple as your own name. Emilia Terzon spoke with Kate Locke, who experienced just this. Kate’s now an activist for the deaf community…and has been awarded human rights awards for improving standards on things such as closed television captioning. Kate blogs online about these issues

MUSIC THERAPY
No one’s quite sure how or why, but music has been found to have a surprising positive effect upon those living with dementia. Essy Knoph brought us two stories from Gary Sterling the family member of someone with dementia, and Ruth Bright a practitioner of music therapy.

VANILLA MALTED
Writer Andy Kissane took us for a wild ride in the boot of a Monaro with an extract from Vanilla Malted. “Vanilla Malted” is part of a book
of short stories The Swarm, to be published later this year.

TELEPATHY
Imagine a place you could go to sit in total complete silence. Back in 2008, two artists, David Haines and Joyce Hinterding decided to create just that. Their vision was a space where no external forces, not even electromagnetic radiation could enter- a space ideal for telepathy. David Haines sat down with Katherine Lim to tell her how it came about.
David Haines and Joyce Hinterding are two artists who live and work out of the Blue Mountains. They exhibit internationally and in Australia. For more info head to their website.

SILENT DINNER PARTIES
Silence for artist Honi Ryan is a bit of an obsession. She has been hosting Silent Dinner Parties in homes around the world since 2007 in such exotic places as Berlin, Shanghai and Sydney. Along the way she observes, participates and hypothesises about silence. Last week, she hosted one in Katherine Lim’s kitchen, so we could experience them first hand. To enquire or book a place at a silent dinner party, you can drop Honi Ryan an email at honi@hedonics.com.au
